4 Part Guide to the Psychology and Development of Children at the Age of 6
While some 6-year-oldsmay start going to a kindergarten, many have already got some experience with school. That is because by 6 year old children develop such qualities as independence and understanding. These qualities help them to cope with issues when being away from home.

Family is still the main thing in 6-year-olds’ lives, although they want to play and spend time with their friends more. They get the idea of ways of behaving at school and at home, and their mind develops more to fit in that vast array of rules that appeared. This might be rather tiring and confusing, that’s why don’t be surprised when your child becomes bossy or clingy after school. Children development and their psychological state at the age of 6 presuppose different reactions to pressure.
Children of this age love playing in groups, become more sympathetic, always ask for permission, but still attached to their parents. Moreover, they understand that all games have to be fair and ask really serious questions.
Part #2 PhysicalDevelopment of Children
At this age kids will show a range of physical skills. There can also be natural variation of growth rates as some kids become taller. Children have developed their coordination and motor skills and get engage in various games as kicking a ball or jumping a rope. Many of them start losing fat and gaining some muscles. You might notice a “stretching out” when your kid gets higher and leaner than he was a couple of years ago. Now they begin to resemble lanky adolescents they are going to become one day.
Children at the age of 5-6 start losing baby teeth, that’s why the image of a kid with no front teeth is so common. These baby teeth are the first to come and the first ones to go, so gradually they are replaced with permanent teeth. It is also very important to teach kids some personal care.
Part #3 Cognitive Development of Children
Most of kids at this age experience the so-called “explosion of learning” when they start school. They enter the world of stories, sharing, crafts, and various activities. They will develop phonemic awareness and learn decoding words. They continue developing longer attention spans, complex thoughts, and curiosity about the world around. 6 year olds start reading and writing more than they used to, or some may only learn how to do it. Children are very imaginative: they write stories about their relatives and themselves.
Part #4 Social Interactions
Psychological development of children at the age of 6 presupposes interactions and maintaining social skills. The social world of such children is more complex than anyone would have thought, as they begin to focus more on friends and peers and show interest in adults outside the family circle, for instance, teachers or friends’ parents. At this age children are able to understand rules much better than before, and they become more interested in making everybody else do what they are supposed to do. You can notice developed skills and increasing interest in socializing with child’s friends and organized activities. Kids at the age of six are often delighted to be a part of a group or a team.
